As part of the Africa2020 season, the cultural institutions of the district of Les Halles are joining forces for a common event: Canopée #Africa2020, on the weekend of 12–13 June 2021. The Médiathèque Musicale de la Ville de Paris and the Bourse de Commerce are coming together to invite the Ugandan electronic music festival, label, and collective Nyege Nyege, as well as the Ugandan DJ DJ Mbodj under the Canopée des Halles. The Médiathèque Musicale de la Ville de Paris is presenting Sophie Garcia’s photographic work dedicated to Nyege Nyege until 28 August 2021. At the same time, the independent label Nyege Nyege Tapes, which initiated the the event, is presenting its complete catalogue, posters, and tapes at the Médiathèque, on loan from the label’s founder, Derek Debru.
Nyege Nyege Label
Founded in 2013 by Arlen Dilsizian and Derek Debru, Nyege Nyege started out as a nightclub in Kampala, created to provide East African DJs, musicians, and artists a space in which to take risks by playing a wide range of sounds in a safe and supportive environment; a place to meet and listen to music, share ideas, and build friendships.
