For almost 10 years, Swiss musician and soundtrack composer Marcel Vaid (winner of the Swiss Film Award for Best Music four times) has been working alongside legendary Norwegian trumpeter and composer Nils Petter Molvær (Best Original Soundtrack at the European Film Awards 2021), a pioneer of the hybridisation of jazz and electronic music, which has given rise to an autonomous genre, 'Future Jazz' or 'Nu Jazz'.
Their collaboration developed between tours with Superterz (Marcel Vaid's avant-garde band), in Europe and Japan, compositions for film, CD releases, and cine-concerts. Harmonising electronic and acoustic instruments, the two create an absolutely unique sound space, where their acoustic sculptures evolve in the moment of improvisation, which they both approach as the way to cross musical boundaries, discover new territories and build new compositions for cinema.
Exclusively for the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi, in an evening that sees the successful collaboration between the projects New Echo System and Cinema Svizzero a Venezia, Vaid and Molvær will play live original compositions to accompany a programme of Swiss experimental films from the silent era, produced for the occasion by the Cinémathèque Suisse.
The event is organised and supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia together with the Consulate General of Switzerland in Milan and the Consulate of Switzerland in Venice, Palazzo Grassi – Pinault Collection and Cinémathèque suisse.
