2019 saw the launch of a new cultural mediation workshop, ‘Altri Sguardi’, offering refugees and migrants the opportunity to take part in a project that Palazzo Grassi dedicated to the issue of migration. The event forms part of a series of initiatives and discussions geared towards social inclusion which, amongst others, has seen the involvement of partners such as Refugees Welcome Italia and a French association known as atelier des artistes en exil.

Appreciating someone’s value means seeking to understand them.

The goal of the workshop is for everyone to share their own experiences and stories, to awaken their deepest sensibilities within the museum, experiencing it as a place for genuine, heartfelt exchange between people with different perspectives. Through ‘Altri Sguardi’, cultural mediation in the museum can establish a dialogue between the pieces on display and the visitors: the project proves to be an opportunity to yield the floor to new voices and provoke fresh perspectives on the works exhibited, sharing this entire experience with the public during a guided tour at the end of the path. ‘Altri Sguardi’ plays with the idea of views, of broadening our own perspectives by absorbing the experiences shared by others, allowing us to discover something different, something ‘other’, through fresh eyes.

The workshop becomes a creative exercise to bring us closer to people, to integrate without losing our own sense of uniqueness which, through art, aims to help us share our experiences with others with a view to cultural exchange, in the hopes of leaving a mark on those who listen to the participants’ stories.

Carefully selected via a call for applications, the participants are guided through their discovery of the works exhibited at Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, helping them to develop their own personal interpretations and an ability to produce a mediating narrative through the creation of content based on the works on display. The series of events concludes with the participants’ presentation of their own reinterpretations and reflections on a handful of specific pieces to visitors to the exhibitions.

It is a fluid experience, made up of a variety of different situations, which helps us learn to broaden our horizons and find common ground.

Listening to the words of the participants conjures up a whole host of subjective impressions and themes, yet these also tend to be shared by many of the people who have felt forced to leave their country of origin to seek out better living conditions in other places.

What emerges loud and clear is their praise for a project that has allowed them to create new relationships in their destination country, as well as to become familiar with the museum and be able to interpret it by sharing their culture of origin with the public.

Through this experience, the participants come to understand that integrating means feeling part of something - perhaps not necessarily taking on a particular behaviour or habit, but becoming familiar with them, appreciating them.

Freedom of expression means feeling valued.

La finalità del laboratorio è quella di condividere le proprie esperienze, le proprie storie, e svegliare la sensibilità più profonda dentro di sé all’interno del museo, vivendolo come luogo di vero incontro tra persone che hanno prospettive diverse. Attraverso “Altri Sguardi”, la mediazione culturale in museo può costruire un dialogo tra opere esposte e visitatori: il progetto si rivela un’occasione per lasciare la parola a nuove voci e generare prospettive differenti sulle opere in mostra, condividendo tutto ciò con il pubblico durante una visita guidata fissata alla fine del percorso. “Altri Sguardi” gioca con l’idea della vista, sull’ampliare le proprie prospettive una volta conosciute le esperienze altrui, per scoprire qualcosa di “altro” sotto una nuova ottica.

Il laboratorio diventa un esercizio creativo per avvicinarsi alle persone, integrarsi senza perdere la propria unicità che, attraverso l’arte, mira a condividere con gli altri le proprie esperienze in un’ottica di scambio culturale, in modo da lasciare una traccia in coloro che ascoltano i racconti dei partecipanti.

Selezionati tramite un bando, i partecipanti sono accompagnati nella conoscenza delle opere esposte nelle mostre a Palazzo Grassi e Punta della Dogana, per scoprire come sviluppare delle interpretazioni personali e una capacità di elaborare un racconto di mediazione attraverso l’ideazione di contenuti sulle opere allestite. Il percorso si conclude con una presentazione delle proprie riletture e riflessioni su alcuni lavori specifici con i visitatori delle mostre.

È possibile ascoltare le testimonianze dirette dei partecipanti dell’edizione del 2021, che vede come fulcro del progetto le opere della mostra fotografica HYPERVENEZIA, tenutasi a Palazzo Grassi dal 5 settembre 2021 al 9 gennaio 2022, e scoprire cosa abbia significato per loro partecipare a questa esperienza.

Ascoltando le parole dei partecipanti, emergono impressioni e tematiche soggettive, ma che accomunano molte delle persone che si sono sentite spinte a lasciare il Paese natale per cercare, in un altro luogo, delle condizioni di vita migliori.

Emerge soprattutto l’elogio a un progetto che permette di creare nuove relazioni nel Paese di arrivo nonché di conoscere il museo e poterlo interpretare condividendo con il pubblico la propria cultura d’origine.

Attraverso l’esperienza i partecipanti comprendono che integrarsi significa sentirsi parte di qualcosa, non necessariamente assumere un comportamento o un’abitudine, ma conoscerli e comprenderli.
