On the occasion of the new cultural season at the Teatrino, Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana introduces a concert programme conceived by the French-American bass Nicholas Isherwood. Two events scheduled on Sunday 11 February and Saturday 18 May offer a new interpretation of the works of some of the 20th century's most prominent composers through the performance of contemporary classical musicians.
The starting event of 11 February is devoted to the composer György Sándor Ligeti, who has renewed the 20th-century musical language through electronic experimentation and invented the method of micropolyphony. Ligeti is also known as the author of the music included in major film masterpieces, in particular for Stanley Kubrick's works, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.
During the evening, the French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard will perform Ligeti's Etudes for Piano, accompanied by interventions by Simha Arom, an ethnomusicologist and expert in Central African music, and the performances by dancer Aminta Traoré and by five percussionists playing traditional instruments from the continent.
