Grand Tour with Haus der Kulturen der Welt
AN EMBASSY OF JOY
For the new edition of Grand Tour, the project aiming to foster exchange between international and Italian museums and cultural institutions, Palazzo Grassi hosts Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, a cultural hub with a multidisciplinary programme that has been developing practices and activities focusing on pluriculturalism, postcolonial discourses and decolonial practices since 1989. The new director Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, together with a new team, is currently readjusting and re-imagining the meaning of a house for the cultures of the world in regard to various communities in Berlin as well as to an international audience.

Through the event, Haus der Kulturen der Welt presents their approach of a multiplicity voices, in a pluriverse of meanings and realities, through the analysis of socially engaged projects Cultures d'Avenir and School of Quilombismo, and shares the work method that combines the idea of Corpoliteracy with the Mixed Classroom Model (VU Amsterdam).
HKW's educational programme often revolves around questions of authority and voice. How can an institution speak with many tongues and many ideas through many people while maintaining a clear identity? Whose voices are amplified, who is silenced? How can socially engaged programmes affect and change the DNA of an institution? What diversification techniques can be employed? Interweaving the history of the institution with ethics and philosophies of programming, combining best and worst practices with a keen eye on institutional change, HKW´s team is engaging in conversations, exemplifications and workshops with the professional audiences to share sparks of change, sparks of Joy as a base for cultural work.
